Installation
============

Requirements
------------

* Python 3.11 or higher
* Java 8 or higher -- optional, needed only by ``lang='java'`` and by the JMT wrapper
* The ``line-cli`` binary -- optional, needed only by ``lang='cpp'``

Installing from PyPI
--------------------

The easiest way to install LINE Solver is via pip::

    pip install line-solver

You can also visit the PyPI package page: https://pypi.org/project/line-solver/

Dependencies
------------

LINE Solver Python requires the following packages:

* numpy
* pandas
* scipy
* matplotlib
* networkx
* websockets
* mcp (the Model Context Protocol server, ``line-mcp``)

These will be automatically installed when you install LINE Solver.

To install these dependencies manually, you can use::

    pip install numpy pandas scipy matplotlib networkx websockets mcp

Verifying Installation
----------------------

To verify your installation, run::

    python -c "import line_solver; print(line_solver.__version__)"

Optional Backends
-----------------

The solvers are a native Python implementation and run with no JVM. The same model can
also be solved by LINE's Java or C++ engine, selected per solver with the ``lang``
keyword::

    MVA(model, lang="java").avg_table()   # needs a Java runtime; jline.jar is fetched on first use
    MVA(model, lang="cpp").avg_table()    # needs the line-cli binary

``line-install`` reports whether a Java runtime is on the path. See :doc:`backends` for
what each backend requires, where its engine is looked for, and which solvers it serves.
